📬What’s the Difference Between GL, WLW, Lesbian, and Sapphic?

These terms—GL, WLW, lesbian, and sapphic—are often used when talking about queer women’s media, but they each have slightly different meanings.

Term Meaning Usage Context
GL (Girls' Love) Romantic/emotional relationships between women, especially in fictional works. Asian media (manga, dramas), Japan, Korea, Thailand
WLW (Women Loving Women) Inclusive term for all women attracted to other women, regardless of label. Western communities, queer media analysis
Lesbian Women exclusively attracted to women. A clear identity label. LGBTQ+ identity use, activism, everyday life
Sapphic Poetic umbrella term for those romantically/sexually attracted to women (incl. bi/pan). Inclusive queer spaces, soft identity, fandoms
